What Is Diabetes in Pets?
Diabetes mellitus occurs when the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar (glucose). In dogs, the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin. In cats, the body often becomes resistant to insulin. Both types require ongoing management to keep blood sugar levels stable.
Common Signs of Diabetes
Early recognition is key. Watch for increased thirst and urination, unexplained weight loss despite a good appetite, lethargy or weakness, cloudy eyes (especially in dogs), and recurring infections.
Insulin Administration
Most diabetic pets require twice-daily insulin injections given at home. Our team will train you on proper injection technique, dosing, and storage. Never adjust your pet's insulin dose without consulting our veterinarians.
Diet & Feeding Schedule
Consistency is critical. Feed your pet the same food, in the same amount, at the same times each day — ideally timed with insulin injections. High-fiber, low-glycemic diets are often recommended. Avoid treats high in sugar or simple carbohydrates.
Monitoring at Home
You may be asked to monitor your pet's glucose levels at home using a glucometer. Keep a log of readings, food intake, insulin doses, and any behavioral changes. This information is invaluable at follow-up appointments.
Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar)
Signs include weakness, wobbling, seizures, or collapse. If you suspect low blood sugar, rub a small amount of corn syrup or honey on your pet's gums and contact us immediately. This is a medical emergency.
Follow-up Care: Regular follow-up appointments are essential for adjusting insulin doses and monitoring your pet's overall health. Most newly diagnosed pets are seen every 1–2 weeks until stable.
